Senate committee outlines concerns about federal sustainability plan in letter to environment minister
Ottawa – The federal government’s upcoming sustainability strategy won’t enable Canada to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and will affirm Canada as below average among G7 countries in emission reduction results.
The Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources shared its concerns with the Draft 2026–2029 Federal Sustainability Development Strategy in a letter to Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin.
The strategy is an overview of federal initiatives to address sustainability. The final version of the strategy is expected to be tabled in Parliament in November 2026.
Over the course of hearings on March 10 and March 26, 2026, the committee learned about the difficulties and shortcomings in the federal response to sustainable development. Since 2000, Canada has made the least progress in improving its sustainable development score among G7 countries and performs lower than average at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In its letter to the minister, the committee encourages the federal government to unify policy direction and strengthen implementation across departments to better align disparate sustainability frameworks, and to set achievable and measurable targets that support progress reporting and accountability.
