The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Finnerty, Gauthier, Kelleher, P.C., Phalen, Sibbeston, Spivak, Stollery and Taylor (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Day and Watt (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne C. Myers, Research Officer and Mollie Dunsmuir.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 20, 2002, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-27, An Act respecting the long-term management of Nuclear fuel waste.

The committee proceeded to the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-27.

It was agreed — That the title stand postponed.

It was agreed — That clause 1 stand postponed.

The Honourable Senator Spivak moved — That clause 2 be amended on page 2, by replacing line 9 to with the following:

```nuclear fuel' waste means domestically irradiated fuel''.

The question being put on the motion, it was defeated.

It was agreed — That clause 2 carry.

It was agreed — That clauses 3 to 5 carry.

It was agreed — That clauses 6 to 8 carry.

It was agreed — That clauses 9 to 14 carry.

The Honourable Senator Finnerty moved — That clause 15 be amended on page 8, by replacing line 41with the following:

``recommendation of the Minister, may select''

The question being put on the motion, it was defeated.

It was agreed — That clause 15 carry.

It was agreed — That clauses 16 to 23 carry.

It was agreed — That clauses 24 to 31 carry.

It was agreed — That clause 32 carry.

It was agreed — That clause 1 carry.

It was agreed — That the title carry.

It was agreed — That the Bill be adopted, without amendment.

It was agreed — That the Chair reports the Bill, as adopted, to the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2001, the committee proceeded to examine issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment and natural resources, including the continuation and completion of the study on Nuclear Reactor Safety. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, February 22, Tuesday, February 27 and Thursday, March 22, 2001, for full text of the Order of Reference).

The committee proceeded in camera, to study the consideration of a draft report.

It was agreed — That senator's staff be allowed to remain in the room.

It was agreed — That the draft report be adopted and tabled at the next sitting of the Senate.

At 9:45 a.m., it was agreed — That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
