The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, at 8:35 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Cochrane, Kenny, Lavigne, Milne, Mitchell and Tardif (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, Research Analyst, Science and Technology and Frédéric Beauregard-Tellier, Economics Division.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, the committee continued its study of emerging issues related to its mandate. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Natural Resources Canada:

Tom Wallace, Director General, Electricity Resources Branch;

Peter Brown, Director, Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division;

Dave McCauley, Senior Policy Advisor, Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division.

David Suzuki Foundation:

Pierre Sadik, Sustainability Specialist.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Wallace and Mr. McCauley made a presentation.

Mr. Wallace, Mr. Brown and Mr. McCauley answered questions.

At 10:27 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:40 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Sadik made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 11:58 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, in camera, in room 9, Victoria Building, at 1:05 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Cochrane, Kenny, Lavigne, Milne and Tardif (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, Research Analyst, Science and Technology and Frédéric Beauregard-Tellier, Economics Division.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, the committee continued its study of emerging issues related to its mandate. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee proceeded to consider two draft reports.

It was moved by Senator Cochrane that the fact-finding mission report be adopted and tabled in the Senate during the week of November 21, 2005.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by Senator Cochrane:

That the draft interim report be adopted; and

That the Chair and Deputy Chair be empowered to approve the final version of the interim report taking into consideration today's discussion and with any necessary editorial, grammatical or translation changes required; and

That the Chair table the report in the Senate as soon as possible.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 3:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
