Flag of the Senate of Canada and its Letters Patent

The Flag of the Senate of Canada was designed between 2010 and 2011. The concept for the flag was proposed by the Honourable Noël Kinsella, who served as Speaker of the Senate from 2006 to 2014. 

The Canadian Heraldic Authority assisted with the design of the flag, which features the Senate Mace paired with the shield of the Arms of Canada against a red background — the colour traditionally associated with the Senate Chamber. Canada’s national flag also appears in the top corner.

The original copy of the Letters Patent for the Senate’s official flag is the document issued by the heraldic authority that formally granted the flag to the Upper Chamber. The announcement of the Letters Patent was made on November 12, 2011 in Volume 145, page 3515 of the Canada Gazette.

The Flag of the Senate of Canada and its Letters Patent are displayed in the Speaker’s Suite in the Senate of Canada Building.
