Speech from the Throne

This large drawing in charcoal and white chalk depicts King Charles III reading the Speech from the Throne in the Senate of Canada Building’s Senate Chamber. The artist, stationed in the public galleries overlooking the dignitaries and guests, relied on photographs, notes and preparatory sketches executed on the spot (one of which is shown here) to produce this richly detailed drawing showing more than 300 people in the Chamber.

Artist Andrew Morrow extends as much care and attention to attendant figures — including event photographers, the Senate Mace Bearer and an Inuk Elder tending a qulliq, a ceremonial Inuit oil lamp — as he does on dignitaries such as the King and Queen, the governor general, the prime minister and the Supreme Court justices.

Mr. Morrow is a University of Ottawa art professor and painter based in Chelsea, Quebec.
