The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 9:37 a.m. this day, in Room 257 East Block, the acting Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Christensen, Cochrane, Finnerty and Kelleher, P.C. (6).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Grafstein (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 10, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill S-18 (See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, June 5, 2001 and Thursday, June 7, 2001 for full text of the Order of Reference).

The Clerk informed the committee that the Chair and Deputy Chair were unavoidably absent.

Pursuant to Rule 11, the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the acting Chair.

The Honourable Senator Finnerty moved that the Honourable Senator Banks be acting Chair of the committee for this meeting.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

WITNESSES:

From the Assembly of First Nations:

Ovide Mercredi, Environmental Spokesperson;

William David, Environmental Scientist.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:39 a.m., It was agreed - That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
