Ottawa – With heartfelt gratitude and respect, the Senate Committee on Official Languages bids farewell to Raymond Théberge, who recently retired as Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages.

Since his appointment in 2018, Mr. Théberge has worked with the committee on major files, notably during the study of Bill C-13, which affirmed the government’s commitment to the substantive equality of Canada’s two official languages.

“We are deeply grateful to Mr. Théberge for his dedication to protecting both official languages, particularly his extensive work on revamping the Official Languages Act and throughout its implementation,” said Senator Allister Surette, chair of the Senate Committee on Official Languages. “Throughout his eight years of service, Mr. Théberge’s observations have been invaluable to our committee, and his leadership has also underscored the essential role of the Commissioner of Official Languages in ensuring language rights are respected and advanced across Canada.”

Committee Deputy Chair Rose-May Poirier added her thanks, as did the other members of the committee, noting the importance of the commissioner’s mandate in safeguarding both official languages – a core Canadian value.

“We wish Mr. Théberge well on his retirement, and we look forward to continuing this work with his successor as the committee reviews the Official Languages Act’s new regulatory frameworks,” said Senator Poirier.

Mr. Théberge’s mandate ended in January 2026 and he will be succeeded by Kelly A. Burke effective March 30, 2026. The committee welcomes Ms. Burke’s appointment and stands ready to work with her in advancing linguistic duality in Canada.
