Senators celebrate Black History Month with students across Canada

Senators and students celebrated Black History Month 2025 at events all over the country in keeping with this year’s theme, “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian leadership and uplifting future generations.” More than 3,000 youth participated in these events, which were co-ordinated by SENgage, the Senate’s youth outreach program.

Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard spoke to students of the Principles of Community Engagement in Child and Youth Studies course at Brock University on February 10, 2025.

Senator Bernadette Clement spoke to Grade 12 students during the Ottawa Local Forum at the University of Ottawa on February 19, 2025.

Senator Sharon Burey spoke with Grade 5 students at St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School in Windsor, Ontario, on February 20, 2025. She then handed out snacks as part of the Student Nutrition Program.

Senator Amina Gerba spoke with 400 high school students at École Cavalier-De LaSalle on February 18, 2025.

Senators Marie-Françoise Mégie, Suze Youance and Bernadette Clement spoke to Grade 6 students from Charles-Sauriol Elementary School in the Senate Chamber on February 19, 2025.

Senators Gerba, Bernard and Youance took part in a webinar organized by SENgage for students between the ages of 10 and 17 from across Canada to mark Black History Month on February 20, 2025. Josiah Olumide and Sonny Gudeta — Grade 12 students from All Saints High School in Ottawa, Ontario — moderated the panel. More than 1,400 students took part in the event.

Senator Youance participated as a panellist during the City of Gatineau’s 23rd edition of Black History Month on February 25, 2025.

Senators Mégie and Youance spoke to members of Mosaïque Interculturelle, a non-profit organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, in the Senate Chamber on February 27, 2025.

Senator Gerba participated as a panellist during a Black History Month discussion at the Université du Québec à Montréal held by the Faculty of Education Sciences on February 27, 2025.
