Senators show solidarity and support for Ukraine: Senator Deacon

Members of the Senate of Canada demonstrated solidarity and support for Ukraine’s heroic efforts to repel Russia’s heinous and illegal invasion by presenting a signed Canadian flag to a delegation from the Ukrainian Embassy. The embassy intends to deliver the flag to the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.

The flag, signed by senators, included a message in Ukrainian, “Ukraine, we are with you.” It is an important acknowledgement of the fact that the fight in Ukraine is not only for Ukraine, but also for the values that underlie our democratic way of life.

Thanks to two members of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Program, several flags were signed by soldiers of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces (Ukrainian army), currently fighting to defend Bakhmut and democracy on the frontline in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. The flags were sent by Alona Palyenka, who was in Bakhmut, to Vladyslava Aleksenko, who now works at the Senate of Canada. They are symbols of gratitude for Canada’s immediate and enduring support for Ukraine as it fights back against Russia’s invasion.

The Ukrainian Embassy delegation, represented by Deputy Head of Mission Andrii Bukvych and Parliamentary Liaison Tetyana Girenko, were presented with the signed Canadian flag in a show of continued solidarity and support for Ukraine as the world marks one year since Russia’s barbaric full-scale invasion.

The embassy was also presented with a flag signed by soldiers of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade “Kholodnyi Yar” of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in Bakhmut thanking the embassy for its efforts in Canada on behalf of the Ukrainian people and soldiers.

Senators welcomed these honoured guests in the Red Chamber, where the courage and resolve demonstrated by the Ukrainian people in defending their future and democracy were noted. Interventions in the Senate Chamber included Senator Stan Kutcher’s statement, which outlined the united efforts of the free world to support the heroic people of Ukraine and the international rule of law.

Mr. Bukvych thanked senators for the invitation and warm welcome from true friends of Ukraine. On behalf of the Ukrainian people, he expressed gratitude to the Senate of Canada, the Canadian government and all Canadians for their leadership and unwavering solidarity and support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty.
